In times of social media and sharing our lives, practices, hobbies or lifestyle, everyone has an input or an opinion on what is right, what is wrong and what is good or bad.
When I share about the Ashtanga Yoga method, suddenly I get strangers writing me Ashtanga is harmful, it’s a cult and not spiritual.

According to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. The highest authority on the Yoga practice there are three means of knowledge.

Pratyakṣa (Direct Perception): Knowledge gained directly through your direct experience. It is immediate experience without the need for an intermediary.
Anumāṇa (Inference): Logical deduction or reasoning. This is when you observe certain signs and conclude a fact based on those observations. (Social media community)
Āgama (Testimony): Knowledge received from trusted authorities, scriptures, or enlightened teachers. You take it to be true based on the reliability of the source.

I have authority to say in my life that this practice for me is beneficial because of my direct experience with it.
I have seen directly people improving their healthy and habits because of the practice.
The knowledge received from trusted teachers and texts has and have been transformative.

There are many paths, tools and practices for self realisation. You choose what benefits you.

What I have learned is that genuine knowledge requires direct contact — Pratyaksha — combined with study under trusted teachers. Without that, opinions remain just that: opinions. Including my own

In Indian traditions — whether Hindu, Buddhist, or Jain — the guru is not simply a teacher in the modern, informational sense. The guru is a living conduit of a lineage. Knowledge (jnana), practice (sadhana), and liberation itself are understood to flow through a human chain, not merely through texts. This is why the Sanskrit word sampradaya (tradition/lineage) is so central — it literally means “that which is handed down.”
The guru doesn’t just teach what to do. The guru transmits how to be.

Reverence for the teacher — guru bhakti — is not mere social politeness. It is considered a prerequisite for receiving knowledge. The classical texts are emphatic about this:
The Mundaka Upanishad instructs the student to approach the guru “with fuel in hand” — a symbol of humble service and readiness to receive.
The Bhagavad Gita (4.34) says: “Learn this by prostration, by inquiry, by service. The wise who have realized the truth will teach you.” — the sequence is significant: bow first, then question, then serve.
The Guru Gita treats the guru as non-different from Brahman, Vishnu, and Shiva simultaneously.

This isn’t about blind obedience — it’s about creating the inner conditions for genuine transmission. Ego resistance, skepticism worn as armor, or using the teaching while rejecting the teacher — all of these were understood to block the student’s own receptivity.

The traditional student — the shishya — was expected to embody:
Shraddha — faith, not naive but committed
Seva — selfless service to the teacher and lineage
Vinaya — humility and absence of arrogance
Dakshina — offering, acknowledgment of what has been received

This last point is subtle but important. Dakshina — traditionally a gift given to the guru after receiving teaching — is not payment in a transactional sense. It is an acknowledgment that what was given cannot be fully repaid. The gift is an act of gratitude and integrity, not a commercial settlement. Receiving the teaching while withholding acknowledgment was considered a kind of spiritual theft.

Ashtanga Yoga method doesn’t need protection as the practice speaks for itself when is done properly with a compassionate guidance of a teacher.
I teach my students the same compassionate way as Sharathji taught me and all his students. It’s just so disappointing to see well known teachers that live (💰) out teaching Ashtanga, but criticise Mysore or the lineage of those who brought and sustained the method for us for so long. If the lineage isn’t honoured, perhaps it deserves a different name. Teach and call something else.
Props in my classes are encouraged when it’s needed. Modifications too when there is pain and injury.

INTERVIEW WITH B.K.S. IYENGAR ON BACKBENDS 12/5/91

Student: Why backbends?
B.K.S. Iyengar: In the asana systems, the most advanced postures are the backbends. The human structure is such that the idea does not strike anyone that the spinal vertebrae can be moved backward as well as forward and sideways, without causing injury. In the field of yoga, backbends are not taught at the early stages in the practice of this art, but only when the body is trained and when it is tuned and toned to such an extent that it can accept these poses. Backbends are to be felt more than expressed. The other postures can be expressed and then felt. But in backbends, like meditations, each person has to feel. And that’s why I thought that after fifty years of teaching, at least some of my students should get the background of the right means to perform the backbends. Backbends are not poses meant for exhibitionism. Backbends are meant to understand the back parts of our bodies. The front body can be seen with the eyes. The back body cannot be seen; it can only be felt. That’s why I say these are the most advanced postures, where the mind begins to look at the back, first on the peripheral level, then inwards, towards the core. For a yogi, backbends are meant to invert the mind, to observe and to feel—first the back, then the consciousness and the very seer. Through the practice of backbends, by using the senses of perception to look back, and drawing the mind to the back portion of the body, one day meditation comes naturally. In other poses, the attention on the back is not given to such an extent and the mind moves outside. Backbends have principles of their own and learning the workings of the mind and intelligence in backbends naturally leads one towards the real aspects of life and the higher aspects of yoga. Because I feel that one who knows, and who looks into the back can look into God. And that’s the reason I gave these backbends.

Ashtanga Yoga method is based on the breath movement synchronization. Every breath and every movement is calculated and it counts.
Here, I’m demonstrating the right side of Ardha Baddha Paschimattanasana.

🙋🏽Is it okay to take extra breaths before entering the posture or during the exit?
A: Yes as long as you are aware that you are taking extra breaths. If the breathing is disorganised, hyperventilating, too many breaths or holding the breath without coming to your knowledge than it can be a lack of attention in the correct breathing method and or lack of knowledge in the vinyasa count.
Led classes are a great tool to establish the correct breathing method.
When tired, in pain or having an injury, taking extra conscious breaths is necessary and can help the body to slowly get into hard positions.

The body stores emotional experiences and traumas, known as “body memory”, which often persist when the conscious mind cannot recall the events. These memories are locked in as physical sensations, muscle tension, and nervous system responses rather than spoken narratives, influencing behavior through involuntary reactions.
The daily practice of Ashtanga helps us to access places inside our body and nervous system that normally we would not have access to. The repetition is a key for that, because through repetition we can observe mental, emotion and physical patterns plus changing our nervous system responses to stress and mental conditioning.

I was telling a student this week that it takes about 3 months to form a new habit of a daily practice but it’s important to know that the work should not be left aside otherwise it’s a waste of energy and momentum.
Another habit building suggestion is building a habit over three days (initiation), three weeks (consistency), and three months (integration).
Laziness and mental obstacles will appear and often to get through alone is hard!
Find a teacher to guide you, a community for inspiration and support. Find ways to make your practice thrive and not suffer.
