On the mat, this shows up as symbolic correspondence: every posture and movement carries both a visible and an invisible dimension.

One of the hardest positions of the Ashtanga Second Series is the legs-behind-the-head combo, with Dwi Pada Sirsasana (both legs behind the head in a sitting position) being the hardest one.
By this point in the practice, the session is already quite long, since we usually still practice half of the Primary Series beforehand — plus there’s the frustration of the posture itself. I’ve seen well-established Ashtanga practitioners give up on their practice completely at this stage. It can be that discouraging. For some people it takes a few months of regular practice; for others, a few years.
The main reason we work on legs-behind-the-head from a sitting position first is to build active flexibility, as the spine, back muscles, neck, and shoulders need to support the weight of the legs without collapsing. Once this strength is established, we can move into the posture from a lying-down position, since the strength was already gained beforehand. This way we progress more safely — building strength to support the joints first.

I’m teaching a daily online Mysore program, helping home practitioners to safely progress on those discouraging moments in the practice.

When I started practicing, I thought spirituality had to announce itself.

I was attending many different classes.
The teachers who opened class with chakras, poetry, half-hour stories — sometimes too much bláblábla and frufrufru — I thought they were the spiritual ones. The Iyengar teacher I was practicing with never did that. Alignment, mechanics, structure. Nothing else. I quietly decided she wasn’t spiritual.

I was wrong.

Time passed. I came to understand that spirituality cannot be taught. We can teach religion, rituals, techniques to calm the mind — but spirituality transcends all logical knowledge.

Now I see her teaching for what it was, straight from the source — the same Krishnamacharya lineage that runs through my own practice today. And with so many new styles and trends claiming to hold spirituality, many beginners are misled.

Not everything that shines is gold.
Not everything that smells of Palo Santo is spiritual.

Headstand was such a hard posture for me. I remember practicing using the wall, until I signed up for my first Ashtanga class, and it was with Sharathji in Greenwich for his week of Led and conferences. When I got there for the Led Class, it was glass walls 😭 I knew I could not kick up for headstand there. When the Sirsasana count started, I remember getting nervous, and I heard him screaming from the other side of the room: “Go up and don’t fall down”
In my head, I was like oh yeah you wish 😆🫠
I felt immediately down into a backbend, and he screamed: I said to do not fall down!”
So I prepared again to go up, and I felt his hands spotting me.
After that day I realised, sometimes props are helpful but sometimes it just slow down our growth.
One year after that, I was falling over everyday. I was even thinking often if one day I would be able to do it as it was so hard. But I kept practicing with very little to non improvement during the whole year. Very slowly my technique improved and I was falling less. I spent time doing some drills for it and just enjoying the little achievements.
Fear needs to be faced and patience to pick yourself up and try again. Don’t compare your journey with the others. Sometimes this can put us down. Back then I didn’t have a teacher.
When I guide my students nowadays from scratch, they learn so quickly, I feel impressed, they learned much quicker than I have ever dreamed for myself.
Having someone to guide us and give specific cues for our bodies helps us to get there just a bit safer and faster.

In Vedic and Upanishadic tradition, the energetic heart center (Hridaya) is viewed not merely as a physical pump or emotional organ, but as the supreme seat of consciousness, the core abode of the inner Self (Atman), and the dwelling place of the Divine.

The breath is the bridge between body, mind and nervous system.

The body is a reservoir that stores emotions from our past lived experiences. In the yogic tradition, it is even believed that we carry impressions from past lives. The mind refers to our mental processes, thoughts, and conscious experiences that arise through this physical system. It includes our feelings, thoughts, awareness, memories, and beliefs.

In the Ashtanga practice, we use calm, deep, and controlled breathing to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. This state offers countless benefits, including lowering cortisol levels, improving heart rate variability, reducing blood pressure, and promoting a greater sense of calm and resilience.

The breath is the always available tool to connect the conscious to subconscious, the gross body to energetic or subtle, the changeable emotions to stillness and peace.
It doesn’t matter how simple or complicated the postures looks like. The breath is where clarity starts to shine in the body.

The light of the guru is a lamp that never goes dark.
We miss him deeply, yet the bond endures.
The human guru holds the foundation of your life that you are unaware of. When he or she passes, you have to find it and hold it yourself. This takes time. Lineage is everything. As family heirlooms are passed from one generation to the next, an authentic practice lineage continues unbroken through oral and written tradition, as well as mind-to-mind transmission.
There were so many aspects about my teacher that I loved; his joyous laughter and giggling, his serious approach when needed, his teachings of the scriptures, his intense fondness for children and babies, deep appreciation for nature and animals.
Some may meet their teacher only once, while others have the great fortune to spend years in proximity.
The guru is omniscient, powerful, and compassionate. And when freed of the constraints of a human form, omnipresent.

From a heart full of gratitude 🙏🏽
