One time in Mysore I told Sharathji about discomfort in one of my shoulders in Kapotasana. He said: Don’t open your elbows. It was a bit hard to change the pattern but when I managed to keep both shoulders externally rotated in and out of the position, I didn’t have discomfort there anymore.

Here is a little challenge for Kapotasana practitioners. Get a block, squeeze in and don’t let the block fall out 🙌

Yoga community shouldn’t be a bubble of peace and love “only” but it does feels good to be around people who are willing to to work on themselves for themselves and also for the benefit of people around them. Yoga practitioners are far from being perfect people. Far from being completely emotional stable, completely healed and completely selfless. But that’s what the teachings teach.

My journey into teaching Yoga. Sometimes I get asked how I started and here is a little bit of my journey.
1- I was living in Boone, NC and I was seeking clarity, peace and a way out of suffering. I was practicing regularly in a local school and they open 9 months long 200 hours program. I remember there was a questionnaire and one of the questions was: Why do you want to join this training? I responded I want to learn about the Yamas and Niyamas. Deep inside, I was looking for a way of living that could help me to find peace and easy inside myself.
2- Towards the end of the course, my teacher/mentor told me I need to give a certain amount of hours of teaching and gather the feedbacks. Plus passing on the exams. Otherwise she could not give me the certificate. I told her I didn’t want to teach, that was never something I planned of, so I didn’t need the certificate. She insisted would be good and told me to go home and think about it.
3- Knowing me and thinking on the situation, I had fear of being judged. English as a second language. My Brazilian accent and in general fear of doing something I have never done before. So I decided I should face my fears as part of my spiritual growth and told her I would do it.
4- I had no idea where to find a group of people to teach. My ex husband was the music director of St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Boone and I thought 💭 why not there?
5- We made arrangements with the Father (Dave)and he agreed for me to teach Yoga in the church. I wanted the classes to be completely free. After the first class we were all happy and I felt it was so nice to give back to people the same benefits I was taking of this practice. Even Father Dave took my class ♥️
6- Father Dave allowing me to teach there also taught me that any practice that asks us to contemplate in God is spiritual practice.
7- After few months, I moved to Raleigh and started teaching Vinyasa for Life Power Yoga which I made great friendships. Then slowly I got classes in local Yoga studios, and having part time jobs as well.

Sometimes people asks how I started practicing Yoga and specifically Ashtanga. So here we go!
1- I started Yoga classes when I was between 17/18 because I complained of back pain to my grandmother and she advised me to join a Yoga Class. I was mainly studying in college and travelling the country selling my handmade jewellery on the street and beach. Yes the hippie type girl.
2- I was young and my interest was in partying and getting high. I had a very busy social life. Living in Rio, it was intense, fun but I had also anxiety and emotional issues.
3- Some years later I got an invitation that changed my life path. I got hired to be one of the dancers of the Ringling Brothers & Barnum & Bailey circus in US when they were really popular and I went for it.
4- Although I had no previous professional training and all artists need an audition, I got a very strong recommendation from a friend. I told her my dream was to travel all over the USA…. And it happened
5- I lived for two years in the biggest train of US, and went on so many places performing. I met incredible performers and friends. There I met a clown called Pepe. He was always pissed for the lack of vegan food in our food truck and he said he practiced Ashtanga Yoga 🤣🤭
6- Although my contract could be renewed, I left the circus looking for a normal life and I got depressed. My dog died and everything went down hill. I moved cities few times starting everything from zero.
7- I was in my late 20’s when I found a Yoga school that it was my emotional fortress and after being there for some months attending sometimes three classes a day, they opened a 200h teacher training which I had a partial scholarship. During the course the documentary Ashtanga in NY was played and when I saw the method explained by Sharathji and Patabbhi Jois I knew it was the practice I wanted to pursuit.
We had an Ashtanga Class with a visiting practitioner and I was sooo excited. He told me that Sharathji and his mother Saraswathi would come to USA in few months for a tour.

I left Brazil almost 20 years ago. Many times I feel like an outsider in all places I have spent my adulthood years. Yoga practice is my spiritual base and purpose and the Yoga community gives me some connection and meaning when sometimes I feel I don’t belong anywhere. Holiday season is here and often that comes with anxiety and burnout. The pressure on travelling, or spending time with family members, looking for gifts and the endless cooking can put lots of people on edge. It’s hard to find time for ourselves as the focus is more outwards than in.
Spare time for your practice. Even if is just few Sun salutations and mindful breathing on the mat.

Going yearly to Mysore was my way to connect with my Guru and the traditional method but also to be in the Mysore bubble as many people called. Basically being in that support system and filling up my cup, getting seen and unseen ways of support.
As I see now two seasons passing by from far way, I immensely miss my support system. My community and my school.
The practice when is stablished it will anchor you in uncertain moments of life. I’m grateful for it. The practice certainly gives back what your gave to it before and what you give to it NOW.
While you have your teacher around and a community, my advice is to practice and connect as much as you can so when hard times come, you have your mental and emotional armour.

The teachings we receive to do the practice are not fixed. The practice is non linear. The technique that works today it may be useless tomorrow and perhaps the same technique later will be again necessary. There some general rules but the truth is we all have our unique necessities and capabilities.
In the Mysore style class the teacher will meet you where you are and giving “just enough” tools to get you through the practice but in a way that doesn’t feel overwhelming.
For the teacher to understand better your body and for you also to understand your own body/mind complex, showing up is necessary. As the body and mind are an object of observation in the practice, for teacher and student, regularity and repetition must exist. Only then a relationship with the practice is formed otherwise is just random meetings on the mat.
The nature of the Mysore class is introspective and quiet, but that doesn’t mean you can’t communicate and share if something in the practice feels off or wrong.
Precision and correct technique doesn’t come right away. Sometimes takes many years of trials and errors.
That doesn’t mean your body is incapable.
Sometimes pain and injury comes to show we need to change the technique and get stronger. It’s also not your teachers fault.
The practice intertwine many layers from the bodies dynamically and ever changing. These layers, are the Annamaya Kosha (food body), Pranamaya Kosha (life force or energy body), Manomaya Kosha (mental body), Vijnanamaya Kosha (wisdom or intellectual body), and Anandamaya Kosha (bliss or spiritual body). The practice of yoga helps you explore and become aware of these layers, from the densest physical one to the most subtle inner joy.

1st- Catching the blocks and piling forward
2nd- Taking blocks from the front and dropping back

Sometimes students asks the requirements to start the Intermediate series or when they know they are ready!
It’s highly depends on the student’s practice and the standards of his/her regular teacher towards the student.
In Mysore Sharathji would ask the student to stand up and drop back before adding any posture of the second. Some exceptions were there, but for most of us:
1- Regular practice of the primary series for at least one year
2- The ability to do all postures of the Primary series comfortably with or without help. Without help is the best because it shows you have the strength and flexibility to get in and out of the positions by yourself.
3- Stand back and drop back from Urdhva Dhanurasana

Tomorrow we have morning practice at @ashtangayogakatowice followed by a workshop on drop backs!
Sometimes it’s fear, sometimes less technique…
Sometimes we need to open different sections of the spine, sometimes we need to get a little stronger.

Today my physio said it’s our last consult ❤️‍🩹
I can’t believe. Over 5 years of back pain.
Pain comes and goes that’s okay. But persistent pain over many years is not okay.
I have tried so many things and nothing helped.
Initially the frustration of not being able to do things “as before”. The anticipation grief for not being able to do more. Physical pain also hurt us emotionally. Even if I changed my focus into more the intellectual studies of Yoga, the craving to do certain things were still there.
Something has shifted. Thanks God.
I’m so grateful to walk without pain. To be able to do my practice and not being scare that the next day my body would feel like shit. I don’t know why I had to go through that, still not over, lots of room for improvement and to get stronger. I have to put lots of work daily.
I have never left my practice. My teachers never stopped believing in me and my body proved the ability to heal.
I deserve it.
This is a phrase and an affirmation it was always hard to swallow. Always thinking to deserve something good for me is beyond my reach or beyond my worth. Self compassion Bianca… Self compassion ❤️‍🩹

I grieve the excitement of going to Mysore to practice and this year my heart said to stay put at home, mostly to give energy and time back to my family. Strange to feel like that as I have always prioritised going there no matter what.
But change is inevitable and it’s also okay and sometimes necessary to change our priorities from time to time.
I also grieve of not being there with my friends. After all a big part of the Mysore experience are also in the connections we make. I miss them a lot.
I grieve the absence of my teacher. The thought of seeing an empty chair hurts.
The raw and unapologetic encounter with impermanence.
Time, silence and contemplation gives clarity.
I keep practicing.
