The light of the guru is a lamp that never goes dark.
We miss him deeply, yet the bond endures.
The human guru holds the foundation of your life that you are unaware of. When he or she passes, you have to find it and hold it yourself. This takes time. Lineage is everything. As family heirlooms are passed from one generation to the next, an authentic practice lineage continues unbroken through oral and written tradition, as well as mind-to-mind transmission.
There were so many aspects about my teacher that I loved; his joyous laughter and giggling, his serious approach when needed, his teachings of the scriptures, his intense fondness for children and babies, deep appreciation for nature and animals.
Some may meet their teacher only once, while others have the great fortune to spend years in proximity.
The guru is omniscient, powerful, and compassionate. And when freed of the constraints of a human form, omnipresent.

There’s a lot of noise around Ashtanga these days — critique, caricature, the “sub-community” framing. Most of us are just quieter than the noise. We found something here that held up.
Nothing wrong with discipline. With showing up when it’s inconvenient. With trying again after failing, and working a long time without visible progress.
Growth happens in the unseen.

Practitioners of all levels are invited! This two weeks long retreat have the focus of deepening your personal practice and understanding the intimate relationship of the Yoga on and off the mat.

Morning classes will be in the Mysore style setting which is the traditional method to learn Ashtanga and welcomes all levels! Each student practice at their own pace while Bianca will be there to give personalised support, hands on assists and instructions.
One morning we will practice a Led class format in which all students will practice together the primary series.
Three times per week in the afternoons we will gather for themed workshops, as asana techniques, chanting and pranayama.

The location is a beautiful and cozy boutique hotel, surrounded by rice fields and breathtaking jungle. Just 10 minutes away from Ubud Center.

One of my favourite things about Yoga retreats:

1- Deepening the practice:
Deepening not always mean doing more advance poses or forcing the body into deeper positions, but creating an intimate space for deeper focus, feeling the body, opening the mind for possibilities, working on trust, doing the work without expectations, experiencing a full week of practice.

2- Connections:
The connections with people are priceless. Friendships flourish, experiences are exchanged and the mind/heart are never the same, if you are open enough to allow that.
Connection with the teacher is also priceless. In a world that is difficult to connect physically and even online with a teacher of your choice, having a week to practice and see your teacher daily is so fulfilling. It brings inspiration to continue, a fire that only a teacher can help to light up.

3- Being a tourist:
Travelling to places where culture and ways of living are different than ours, brings lots of change in perspectives, opens the mind to possibilities and heart for compassion.
Travelling is fun, enriching and help us to get out of our own box of social conditioning.

In Maasai culture, red is the most significant color. It symbolizes bravery, strength, and unity. As the color of blood and a key component of their traditional blankets (shúkà) and beadwork, red represents the life force and warrior identity.

The quest of the soul:
The right means are just as important as the end in view. Patanjali enumerates these means as the eight limbs or stages of Yoga. They are:
1- Yama - Universal moral commandments
2- Niyama - Self purification by discipline
3- Asana - posture
4- Pranayama - Rhythmic control of the breath
5- Pratyahara - Withdrawal and emancipation of the mind by the domination of the senses and exterior objects
6- Dharana - Concentration
7- Dhyana - Meditation
8- Samadhi - A state of super-consciousness brought about by profound meditation, in which the aspirant (Sādhaka) becomes one with the object of his meditation - Paramātmā or the Universal Spirit)

He who has conquered his mind is a Rāja Yogi. Raja Tiga implies a complete mastery of the Self. Though Patanjali explains the ways to control the mind, he nowhere states in his aphorisms (Sutras) that this science is Raja Yoga, but calls it Ashtanga Yoga or 8 stages (limbs) of Yoga. As it implies complete mastery of the self one may call it the science of Raja Yoga.

Swatmarama, the author of Hatha Yoga Pradipika (Hatha: Force or determined effort) called the same path Hatha Yoga because it demanded rigorous discipline.
It is generally believed that Raja Yoga and Hatha Yoga are entirely distinct, different and opposed to each other, that the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali deal with Spiritual discipline and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika of Swatmarama deals solely with physical discipline. It is not so, as Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga complement each other and form a single approach towards Liberation.
As a mountaineer needs ladders, ropes and crampons as well physical fitness and discipline to climb the Icy peaks of the Himalayas, so does the Yoga aspirant needs the knowledge and discipline of the Hatha Yoga of Swatmarama to reach the heights of Raja Yoga dealt with by Patanjali.

Ubuntu—“I am because we are”

Observing and learning from the daily lives of local Africans—offers profound lessons in community, resilience, and minimalism. It shifts the focus from material possessions to human connection, celebrating the present moment despite resource constraints.

Despite facing daily economic challenges, there is a deep cultural tendency to focus on gratitude and joy. Generosity and open-heartedness build bridges between diverse people and make everyone feel like extended family.

This trip to Zanzibar brings deeper introspections , how I see the world and my conscious and subconscious interactions with people. Being a tourist is bittersweet. I hope everyone that travels to Africa can reach deeper levels of awareness to what really matters which sometimes is easily forgotten living comfortable lives in other parts of the world.

Low tide walk 💛
I have seem starfishes before but not this colourful. There is a Starfish point at the beach close to our hotel, we just need to remember to keep them in contact with water as the Starfish typically begin to suffocate and can die within 3 to 5 minutes out of water. Also wearing sunscreen or perfume can poison their delicate tissue.
Surya was very happy to see them but he didn’t want to take it out of the water for a photo (🥳). The water is so transparent it seems they are out but I promise we were keeping them submerged 🩵

Primary Series physically works as a sequence of asanas to bring healing to the internal organs, targeting the digestive system. Having digestive issues since ever, that was the first physical benefit I experienced from the practice. Yes - going to the bathroom regularly ❤️🙏🏽
All the folds, the twists, pushing the heels inside the lower belly in the half lotuses. The Primary series sets a healing foundation for the body. It also opens the hip, the hamstrings, lower back, strength the core to make the body ready for more complex asanas. Energetically is grounding, and as most of people come to the practice with higher levels of stress and overstimulated, the primary series offers a calm, steady and grounding container for our minds to find stillness.
The second series have a different energetic intention. It stimulates the nervous system with all the backbends, the core and spine should be ready to take in the load - hopefully ready from previous work, the hip opener increases tremendously and then we are asked to find stability in the spine and core with the arm balances.
